Former Georgia football player Ahkil Nasir Crumpton has been sentenced to 30 years in prison after he was convicted of various offenses relating to the shooting death of a petrol station clerk.

In announcing Crumpton’s sentencing, the Justice Department said that court documents and evidence presented at the trial indicated that Crumpton approached store clerk Elijah Wood at 1:15 a.m. on March 19, 2021, at a RaceTrac gas station in Watkinsville, Georgia, and “pointed a Glock 19 pistol with a weapon mounted light at Wood, firing one round at close range towards Wood, striking him in the chest.”

Wood, who was on a FaceTime chat with his fiancée at the time, died at the scene as Crumpton escaped without removing any money from the cash register or anything from the store.

Later that year, Crumpton, now 26, was involved in a fight with a man called Anthony Jones in Philadelphia, in which Crumpton shot and murdered Jones.

Crumpton shot and killed Jones after Jones allegedly robbed Crumpton of his car keys and a second handgun. The ballistics testing on the Glock 19 pistol used by Crumpton in the Philadelphia incident confirmed that the identical gun was used to kill Wood in Georgia.

Crumpton was detained by FTI and ATF investigators in his native Philadelphia last March on a murder warrant stemming from the killing in Georgia.

The Justice Department reported that Crumpton jumped out of his bedroom window but was later caught by FBI SWAT during a chase.

The feds located the Glock 19 that ballistics testing proved was used in both deadly shootings inside a backpack in Crumpton’s bedroom and also uncovered clothing that he wore during both killings.

Crumpton’s teammate, Juwan Taylor, testified during the trial that Crumpton had confessed to the shooting at the gas station, stating, “I didn’t mean to do it—I just wanted the money; I just shot him at the store,” and that the gun “just went off.”

Crumpton played wide receiver for Georgia during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. Crumpton’s punishments boiled down to 20 years in jail for interference with commerce by attempted robbery and an extra 10 years for false statements during the acquisition of a handgun.

On the latter allegation, co-defendant James North Armstrong acknowledged acquiring the Glock 19 for Crumpton and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine after pleading guilty last October to one count of false statement during the acquisition of a firearm.
