Dan Campbell praised the embattled Detroit Lions DL with admiration.

Levi Onwuzurike, a defensive lineman for the Detroit Lions, is facing a pivotal training camp in 2024 after three seasons of injury and subpar play.

But Onwuzurike has answered the call and put himself in position to make the roster and play defense.

The former second-round pick has frequently been a star at practice the whole offseason, and he’s been seeing reps with the first-team defense, working both inside and on the edge.

On Wednesday before practice, head coach Dan Campbell stated that the 26-year-old is enjoying a great offseason. “He’s earned it,” Campbell said of Onwuzurike receiving more reps, according to Justin Rogers of Detroit Football Network. “He’s clearly a top player. It’s obvious. He plays violently, is stout, is better than ever, and has demonstrated adaptability.

The big end in base and three-technique allow him to play big end in nickel and sub. He deserves it. He keeps going because he feels well and is happy.”

The Lions’ loss of defensive tackle John Cominsky to a long-term injury may allow Onwuzurike to receive additional playing time, potentially until the playoffs.

Making Onwuzurike’s showing even more vital in 2024, he’s slated to hit free agency in 2025 as he approaches the final year of his rookie agreement.
