More details about the Calgary Flames’ new arena are due today, making it a historic week. Fans have been watching the new arena’s name. Known as the “Saddledome” due to its roof, the team’s arena is one of the NHL’s most famous.
City officials hope to replace the Saddledome with a similarly iconic name, but it appears they won’t. A recent source says the arena will remain Scotiabank as its sponsor but lose the “Saddledome” brand.
The building will now be called as “Scotia Place,” as seen in a photo by Global Calgary reporter Michael King. Calgary’s worst-kept secret: Scotia Place will be the new event center.

As King said, the newly dubbed Scotia Place will be sharing a similar name with dozens of other buildings across the country. Even more intriguing, however, is that they are opting to name the building in the same fashion as their up-road neighbours, with the Edmonton Oilers playing in “Rogers Place.”
Construction on the 18,000-seat arena is slated to start ground this month with the aim that Soctia Place would be complete in time for the 2027-28 NHL season.
There have been lots of difficulties with the current Saddledome that the Flames play in. Age has rendered it one of the worst-maintained venues in the entire league and it routinely finds its way onto player opinion rankings as one of the least-desired locales to play in.
That won’t stop the Saddledome from getting a tiny bit of a face-lift in its last seasons, as a new jumbotron will be installed in time for the 2019 season. Renderings on the new Scotia Place are expected to be revealed later today.
