Bronny James put together his second successive encouraging effort with 13 points as the Los Angeles Lakers upset the Cleveland Cavaliers 93-89 in the NBA Summer League on Thursday night.
The son of NBA great Lebron tallied eight first-half points on 3-of-5 shooting, ending the game by making 5 of 10 shots, including one of three from 3-point range. James also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.
The 19-year-old, ranked 55th in the draft, had been struggling during summer play until he scored 12 points in an 87-86 victory over Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. Before that, he was 7 for 31 from the field this summer and 4 for 19 in two games at Las Vegas.
Last season, James played his only year of collegiate basketball at Southern California, where he averaged 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in the team’s final 25 games.
He missed the start of the season owing to an operation to fix a congenital heart abnormality found after he experienced a cardiac collapse during a workout last summer.
Lakers will be more happy with their draft picks in the previous few days with fellow rookie Dalton Knecht having another solid outing.
The 23-year-old scored 20 points and seven rebounds on 7-16 from the field to illustrate why he is looking more and more like a solid rookie for the Lakers.
Meanwhile, it was another night to forget for No2 overall pick Alex Sarr despite the Washington Wizards’ win against Sacramento Kings.
On Wednesday, Sarr struggled offensively, missing all 15 of his field goal tries, including seven from three-point range, and both of his free throws. However, he made an impact defensively with nine rebounds and three blocks.
It didn’t get much better on Thursday night as he finished 1-of-6 from the field with 11 rebounds and four assists, increasing his shooting total for the last two games to a worrying alarming 1-of-21 from the field. Across his four Summer League games, Sarr has 22 points on 9-of-47 from the field and is shooting 11.7 from deep.
