Any momentum that the Toronto Blue Jays built by capturing two of three against the AL Central-leading Guardians disappeared when they were swept on their own field by the Boston Red Sox. Those three losses reduced the Jays to 35-39 on the season, tied for last place in the AL East.

The Jays are now not only 15.0 games behind the first-place Yankees in their division, but they’re 5.5 games back of the third Wild Card slot. They’re not completely out of it, but Fan Graphs gives them a 10.7% chance of making the postseason. What’s most damning of all, is the Jays haven’t given their fans any cause to believe that the team is capable of making a run.

It feels like the Boston sweep might be what pushes the Jays closer to being trade-deadline sellers. There’s still a significant amount of time before the trade deadline, but if they don’t start winning, selling will become their only option. That doesn’t seem to be the most likely option at the moment, especially considering that it would take a significant leap for the Guardians to go out and empty the top of their farm system for a talent like Guerrero.

Instead, the Guardians might look to the Blue Jays to replace another void on their roster, but this time at a far more acceptable price tag. The hole in question: commencing pitching. The Blue Jay in question: righty Chris Bassitt.

Cleveland’s bullpen has been terrific this year, statistically the best in baseball. If they’re leading after six or seven innings, it’s almost as if the game is over totally. This amazing bullpen has been a significant factor for the Guardians’ 44-24 record at this point in the year.

The only reason they’re not even better is because their starting pitcher hasn’t been nearly as good as the bullpen has. Tanner Bibee, Ben Lively and Triston McKenzie have all been around or above an ERA+ of 100. But the last two slots in the rotation have truly failed the squad down, causing the Guardians to make a move to enhance here.
