The proposed trade sees the Eagles unload an ‘Aging’ $38 million veteran to the Cardinals.
This “possible” transaction would be advantageous to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles would give the Arizona Cardinals a 2025 fifth-round pick in return for cornerback James Bradberry and a 2025 fourth-round pick, according to a suggested trade put out by Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report.
In short, Ballentine’s claim is that Bradberry is an experienced player who is “aging” and has a big cap charge. The 30-year-old cornerback just finished what was likely his worst season to date.
Ballentine notes that “the 30-year-old cover man had one of his best seasons when he arrived in 2022.” However, he personified the Eagles’ collapse in the latter part of the previous season. After giving up a 51.6 rating, he was accused with giving up 11 touchdowns in coverage and a quarterback rating of 114.3.
There are several reasons why it makes sense to trade Bradberry. The veteran cornerback’s deal is a burden; in addition to his advanced age and declining effectiveness, he owes $38 million, of which $20 million is guaranteed over three seasons. There are two more years left on his deal.
The fact that Philadelphia selected cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean with their first two draft picks lends even more credence to the notion that Bradberry may be done for good. It’s obvious from those choices that the Eagles weren’t satisfied with their cornerback situation.
In addition to his dismal coverage numbers during the regular season, Bradberry’s sharp fall was seen on national television when the Eagles fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs.
During the playoff loss, Bradberry gave up five receptions (on six targets) for 108 yards, a touchdown, four first downs, and 21.6 yards per reception while covering.
According to teammate Darius Slay, Bradberry is happy despite his uncertain future in Philadelphia.
“I communicate with Bradberry frequently. Slay stated, “He’s in good spirits,” on Wednesday, May 22, at the NovaCare Complex. “JB, are you really in his ninth year? Yes, he is doing well. He was a Pro Bowl player, an All-Pro, and a high earner. We had conversations. He’s feeling upbeat.
Finding a taker is the problem, even if it is obvious that the Eagles would like to part ways with their seasoned starting cornerback. Because Jonathan Gannon, the head coach of the Cardinals, was the defensive coordinator for Philadelphia before, Ballentine suggests them as a potential destination.
Bradberry really had a successful season in 2022 while under Gannon’s coaching.Bradberry recorded an 80.2 rating in coverage and a 74.1 defensive grade in 2022, according to Pro Football Focus. Among all cornerbacks, Bradberry ranked 11th in coverage and 23rd in defensive grade.
Ballentine talks about how hard it is to deal Bradberry because of his contract. But if they trade him after June 1st, they can save a small amount of cash.
Ballentine argues, “A reunion with former defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon could be beneficial, but there’s not much that can be done about the last two.”
The one that Philadelphia is having trouble with is Bradberry’s heavy contract. Letting him leave comes with a lot of dead cap, and trading him after June 1 is the only way they can even make a little profit in 2024.
Ballentine goes on to say that the Cardinals are a good trade partner for Bradberry because of their plenty of cap space.
Ballentine writes, “The Cardinals are uniquely qualified to take them up on that.” “They have $22.1 million in cap space, Gannon has coached him before, and general manager Monti Ossenfort obviously enjoys answering phones.”
