Bayer Leverkusen defeated Augsburg 2-1 on Saturday to wrap up their undefeated Bundesliga campaign.
The season’s last league game was always going to be a happy event for Xabi Alonso’s team in front of their home supporters after they had secured the title a few weeks prior, and they did not let fans down.
Within 12 minutes, Victor Boniface gave the hosts the lead, which they doubled fifteen minutes later when Robert Andrich scored.
Mert Komur gave Augsburg a small chance to retaliate in the 62nd minute of the second half, but Leverkusen held on to complete their historic victory.
After the game, the players celebrated together on the field as Alonso hugged his coaching staff and raised the Bundesliga trophy in front of an enthusiastic audience.
Before this season, in their 120-year existence, Leverkusen had never won a league title. However, this time, they swept the Bundesliga, ending with 90 points from 34 games, 28 victories, and 6 ties. Leverkusen’s supremacy was seen in the 89 goals they scored and the mere 24 goals they gave up during these games.
They were 17 points ahead of Stuttgart, who on the last day of play passed Harry Kane’s Bayern Munich in the standings.
Due to Kane’s back injury, Bayern jumped out to a two-goal lead before losing 4-2, while Stuttgart defeated Borussia Monchengladbach 4-0 to move up to a point and a spot above Thomas Tuchel’s team.
Leverkusen has excelled in other tournaments as well, and they are still on track to complete an unprecedented Triple Crown without dropping a single match.

After winning their last 51 games, Alonso’s club advances to the Europa League final, where they will take against Atalanta on Wednesday night. Next Saturday, they will play Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final.
Leverkusen has only ever won the Europa League once, in the 1987–88 season when it was still known as the UEFA Cup.
In 1993, they were the winners of the German Cup (DFB-Pokal), and they have subsequently placed third three times in the competition.
Given how infrequently that occurs, it would truly be tremendously outstanding from any team. But the fact that Leverkusen and Xabi Alonso, their new manager, are involved only serves to enhance the feat. Among the great successes is…
