Dak Prescott of the Cowboys boasts outstanding regular-season stats.
Quarterback Dak Prescott is the one who divides the Dallas Cowboys fan base the most in recent memory. Pundits and the media follow suit, arguing nonstop about Prescott’s position among his fellow starting quarterbacks in the NFL today. Stats provide one perspective on the matter.
Therefore, we looked at how Dak Prescott’s eight seasons of play stack up against others at his position throughout history. Unbelievably, the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys has quietly started his career with some outstanding regular season stats.
This offseason, there has been a lot of discussion regarding the franchise quarterback and whether or not he deserves a record-breaking contract deal. As Prescott approaches the last year of his deal that he signed with the organization in 2021, people expect more from him in the postseason even though he may have all the in-season numbers.
Throughout his career, Prescott has only won two playoff games to go along with his five defeats. That’s not very good. There are 47 signal callers that had more postseason victories over their first eight seasons in the league among quarterbacks who have attempted at least 160 passes during the playoffs.
Nick Foles, Matt Hasselbeck, Kerry Collins, Drew Bledsoe, and the late, great Wade Wilson—Prescott’s position coach at the beginning of his career—are on that list.
Regular-season Prescott and postseason Prescott will be considered two different things for the purposes of this discussion. You have to look at the other side of the issue if you want to argue against the other side, which is the lack of postseason success.
To his credit, Prescott took over as a rookie and has remained in the starting lineup for the Dallas Cowboys for the past eight seasons.
Despite missing time due to injuries in 2020 and 2021, he has recovered to become a greater professional than most predicted at the beginning of his career. Coming off of his best season as a pro, the Cowboys signal-caller was selected to the second team All-Pro and placed second in the MVP voting.
A nod to younger full-time starters like Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, and Patrick Mahomes, but also a useful approach to compare Prescott’s first eight years to other quarterbacks in the same stretch of their careers is to use Stathead’s “60 minimum games started” filter. The sixty games take out inflated stats from players that have an edge due to a small sample size.
