Good news: Detroit Air Port bus service commences operation…

The new Detroit airport bus service will start later this month.

The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) announced today that a new express bus service from downtown to the airport will start on March 25. The trial program called DAX (Detroit Air Xpress) will be ready for the NFL Draft in late April.

The service will feature 16 roundtrips per day to and from the airport, including stops at both the Evans and McNamara terminals. The service will run from 3:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. and pick passengers downtown on the west side of Washington Boulevard, near State Street (between Michigan and Grand River).

Rates are $6 in advance and $8 at the door. This is down from a suggested $15 earlier this year, based on public feedback. Tickets can be purchased here.

The buses are equipped with wifi, charging stations, capacity for bags, and restrooms. Michigan Flyer is operating the bus service.

One long-standing issue in Detroit’s poor transit scene is the absence of options to and from the airport. SMART has a FAST bus that goes between downtown and DTW, with many stops in between. The DAX service is scheduled to take 30–50 minutes, depending on traffic. More information on DAX and scheduling can be found here.
