19 NBA talents are ineligible for awards (including Joel Embiid and Donovan Mitchell!) because of the new 65-game rule.
The NBA’s contentious 65-game award criteria will surely be a hot-button item to debate this offseason. For those of you out of the loop, the NBA needs players to play in at least 65 games to be eligible for playoff awards for the first time in league history.
If a player can’t achieve that threshold, that player isn’t eligible to win major accolades like the MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, and more. The player also wouldn’t be eligible to make any of the three All-NBA teams or the two All-Defensive teams. If a player can’t win any of those accolades, they might be missing out on hundreds of millions of dollars.
Kevin Durant was the first player to call this new rule out when it was announced as a possibility this season. It’s surely still just as controversial as it was back then. Lots of players are already out of the running for honors.
Joel Embiid is the most famous name here. The 76ers center seemed to be on a course toward another MVP before hurting his meniscus. Now, his emphasis is simply on getting healthy for the playoffs.
Donovan Mitchell will miss the Cavaliers’ game against the Suns; thus, that’ll put him out of the running for an All-NBA position this season, despite him having the finest year of his career.
Porzingis has been held out of many games so far this year due to lingering issues. He’s played 45 games but has missed too many to be nominated for postseason accolades.
OG Anunoby was undoubtedly going to garner some attention for an all-defensive team with the way he was playing after being traded to the Knicks. But he’s missed 18 straight games with an elbow injury and is ineligible for playoff accolades currently.
Jimmy Butler has been in and out of the Heat lineup this season with various injuries. He’s played in 45 games so far this year but just missed the mark.
Marcus Smart is out with a finger injury and has no schedule for his comeback so far. Memphis’ backcourt hasn’t been able to avoid the injury bug.
LaMelo Ball has only played in 22 games this season and is on a current run of 21 games missed with Charlotte. It’s been a challenging season for the Hornets’ point guard.
Desmond Bane has only participated in 37 games this year and has been out for almost two months with a high ankle sprain injury.
Bradley Beal has been in 35 games for Phoenix this season, which is the least amount between the team’s big 3 of Kevin Durant, Beal, and Devin Booker.
Garland has played in 40 games so far this year and has been reasonably healthy, aside from the broken jaw that kept him out for months early in the year.
Murray has played in 48 games so far this season, but he just missed the 65-game cutoff after spraining his ankle at the beginning of the month. He won’t have a shot at an All-NBA squad this year.
Evan Mobley is on the mend again after spraining his ankle against the Celtics in the Cavaliers’ historic comeback triumph. He’s only played in 38 games so far this season, which is rather a shame because he’s been one of the NBA’s top defenders.
Zach LaVine is out for the season after having surgery to fix a foot ailment. He’s allegedly ahead of schedule, but it won’t count as far as postseason honors go.
Chris Paul has participated in 39 games so far this season and is healthy after recuperating from a fractured hand injury. He has still missed too many games to be eligible for playoff accolades.
Russell Westbrook is sidelined with a fractured hand after having surgery. He’ll miss the remainder of the season, but the Clippers anticipate having him back for the playoffs.
Khris Middleton has been in and out of the Bucks lineup this season. He’s only played 33 games so far this year. Tyler Herro has only appeared in 36 games so far this season and is now out in Miami with a foot injury.
