Chelsea are supposedly searching for a summer transfer for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams.
Chelsea are allegedly looking for a summer transfer for Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. The 21-year-old is having a terrific season for Bilbao and is receiving interest from a host of Europe’s elite clubs, with Arsenal also intrigued.
Williams has scored six goals and contributed 11 assists in 27 games in all competitions. Despite signing a new contract in December, the release clause remained at £43 million, which won’t put clubs off bidding this summer.
The Telegraph says that although the cost would be relatively low, Williams would command significant earnings, with the Spanish international said to be earning £100,000 a week after tax in Spain, which would put him among the top earners at Stamford Bridge.
Williams can play on either wing but began out as a left winger, which is currently where Raheem Sterling and Mykhailo Mudryk play.
The Telegraph adds that there is currently no desire to sell Sterling or Mudryk, and that both players remain loyal to the club.
Sterling was subject to an approach from Saudi Arabia last summer and might be pursued again this summer, while Bayern Munich asked about signing Mudryk on loan in January.
An out-and-out striker remains Chelsea’s first aim in the summer, and Victor Osimhen and Benjamin Sesko are among the club’s top targets, but they have been impressed with the growth of Williams.
Given how pricey a striker is likely to be, any prospective deal for Williams could rest on how much money the Blues can bring in through player sales.
