MELBOURNE, Fla. Texas A&M golfer Adela Cernousek stood in second with a 5-under 67 in the first round of the Moon Golf Invitational at the Suntree Country Club on Saturday.
“We are super close,” head coach Gerrod Chadwell remarked. “In the practice round earlier today, we were rolling it really well. It carried over a little into the round, but we just didn’t execute in some spots. I am heartened by the things that I am starting to observe, and we will use tomorrow to recuperate and get ready for Monday.”
Cernousek matched her season-low score of 67, which she fired in the second round of the Stephens Cup earlier this year. She picked up three strokes on the final two holes of the day with a birdie on No. 11 and an eagle on No. 10 to catapult her into solo second. The kid banged down a team-best six birdies en route to the 67. The Antibes, France, native is one stroke behind Florida’s Maisie Filler for the individual lead.
The Aggies shot 2-over 290 and tied for sixth after 18 holes. Auburn led the field at 6-under 282, with LSU (-5), Louisville (-2), Ole Miss (-1), and Virginia Tech (E) completing out the top five.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio tied for 32nd with a 1-over 73 and made five birdies. Jennie Park and Blanca Fernández García-Poggio accounted for the final two counting scores at 3-over 73. The two both had a share of 57th. Mia Nixon logged an 8-over 80 and tied for 85th.
The initial start date of Sunday will be washed out owing to severe rain; thus, the second round will begin on Monday morning.
