Manchester United have ‘initiated contact’ with Bayern Munich over the transfer of striker Mathys Tel, according to a report from Germany.
Tel is 19 in April and is only beginning his second season as a Bayern player having only signed from Rennes in 2022, but he has grabbed the eye of clubs around Europe during his limited outings in Bavaria.
Sky Sports Germany report United have been in contact regarding the Frenchman’s availability, with two other undisclosed Premier League sides also making enquiries recently.
United’s intention to bring in a new forward has been apparent – manager Erik ten Hag has expressed his dissatisfaction the club did not have the needed cash to buy one in January – and Tel is on their list of choices for the upcoming transfer window.
Ironically, the Red Devils held talks with Tottenham Hotspur last summer for Harry Kane previous to his move to Bayern.
However, the source claims Tel is keen to stay and battle for his spot at Bayern with the ambition of becoming a legend at the club, even if the reigning German champions hope to acquire a new striker to replace the veteran Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting this summer.
Tel, who is adept of playing all over the frontline, has registered six goals and three assists in 27 games in all competitions for Bayern this season, albeit most of these appearances have been from the bench. He notably scored in their 4-3 triumph against United in the group rounds of the Champions League in September.
90min reported earlier this week United’s new shareholders INEOS are still busy identifying positions that they need to strengthen in this summer as they begin their makeover of the club’s internal structure. However, they are undoubtedly on the market for an experienced striker, while they have endorsed the Red Devils’ long-standing pursuit of Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise.
