PREVIEW: Enzo Fernandez is now amenable to Chelsea’s exit
Enzo Fernandez, a midfielder for Chelsea, is reportedly thinking about leaving the team, according to FootballTransfers.
Talks about possible prospects for the gifted midfielder have started with a number of teams by the player’s agents, notably his longtime representative, Uriel Perez.
With the help of superagent Jorge Mendes, Fernandez first joined Chelsea for a Premier League record of €121 million, but he hasn’t lived up to the hype at Stamford Bridge yet. The World Cup winner’s contract, which continues until 2032 despite the club having exercised a one-year provision, would undoubtedly be a sticking point. The dynamics surrounding the possible move are still unknown, including if the player or his representative are driving a transfer away.
When he signed, the young player was billed as a “complete midfielder,” but his performances to date have indicated that he is very limited.
Following their agreement with Benfica, Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali released a statement that said, “In Enzo, we are signing a World Cup-winner and one of the brightest talents in global football.”
“We are thrilled to have him join Graham Potter’s team, and we have no doubt that he will play a significant role in our future. We’re excited to see what Enzo can do with Chelsea Blue because he has shown himself at the highest levels.”
It has been more than a year since Fernandez joined the West London club, and in 49 games, he has only managed five goals and three assists.
We also hear that Mykhailo Mudryk asked the club in January if he might go on loan from Chelsea to catch up, but they informed him it would not be feasible.
Mauricio Pochettino, the manager of Chelsea, has made it clear that Fernandez must do better on the field and that his current relationship with Moises Caicedo—two of the most expensive midfielders in the Premier League—has not lived up to expectations.
The former Tottenham manager stated of his countryman following the dismal 2-0 loss to Everton only a month ago: “Of course, there needs to be improvement in their relationship amongst each other and personally as well. When you come, there is a great deal of expectation since they are young.
“Enzo spent three months in Europe at Benfica prior to joining the Premier League, and Caicedo spent one season at Brighton. Since they must contribute to the answer, they are not in the best position to act fast.
“They don’t make the perfect finishing touch. In football, it’s not like this. Even if you have good quality and people can tell that the club paid you a lot of money, you still have to perform if you join a young, inexperienced team that is still building. Some people’s ignorance of football leads them to believe this.
