A 3-1 loss dealt a potentially catastrophic blow to Liverpool’s title chances, and it came at the expense of two of their most reliable mainstays.
A hopeful pass over the top caused all kinds of problems, with the score at 1-1 against Arsenal and the Reds having a strong start to the second half.
After letting the ball bounce, Virgil van Dijk attempted to stop Gabriel Martinelli’s run so that Alisson Becker could pick it up.
But in a scene of total malfunction, the exact opposite occurred, with the ball landing right at Martinelli’s feet to slot into an open goal.
There was much discussion about who was at fault, with former Chelsea and Arsenal defender Scott Minto blaming the goalie in particular.
The talkSPORT pundit stated, “The ball was played over, and Van Dijk got there first, but Alisson is coming out.” Alisson needs to take charge of the issue because he has already run all the way past the ball.
“As a defender, you want the goalie to take charge of the situation and give the other players a warning to move aside. Ultimately, Van Dijk is out of the game, and Alisson has done nothing. “Martinelli will never score an easier goal in his career.”
The goal was vital as Liverpool managed to recover from a dismal first forty-five minutes to draw level.
Fourteen minutes in, Bukayo Saka opened the score, and then Gabriel Magalhaes turned a pass from Luis Diaz into his own goal.
Martinelli then scored the game-winning goal, and Leandro Trossard, in what was a miserable evening for the Brazilian, scored through Alisson’s legs after Ibrahima Konate was sent off.
